In November 1992, the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) and the Taiwan Straits Exchange Foundation (TEF) reached a consensus that “both sides of the Taiwan Straits belong to one China and will work together toward national reunification”, which was later known as the “1992 Consensus”.

In January 1995, then Chinese President Jiang Zemin emphasized that “adherence to the one-China principle is the foundation and prerequisite for peaceful reunification”.

On March 14, 2005, China’s National People’s Congress passed the Anti- Secession Law, which emphasizes that when the possibility of peaceful reunification is lost, the state must adopt non-peaceful means to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity, marking the transition into the new stage of “containing independence and promoting reunification by law”.

Since the 18th CPC National Congress, keeping a clear eye on the changing situation across the Taiwan Strait, and proceeding from the overall and long-term interests of the Chinese nation, the CPC Central Committee has resolutely opposed and contained the secessionist acts of “Taiwan independence”. President Xi Jinping has repeatedly stressed that separatist acts could only lead to catastrophic damage to compatriots on both sides of the Strait as they instigate hostility and confrontation, and undermine stability in the region.

The question of Taiwan is an internal affair of China. The Chinese government resolutely opposes any external forces playing the “Taiwan card” and remains steadfast in fighting malicious acts related to Taiwan, so that more and more countries and people will understand and support China’s just cause of safeguarding national reunification.
